A problem reading characters in non ASCII charset was found and fixed 
recently:
http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOT-2623

The fix went into the GT2 2.6.0 release. No more 2.5.x releases are
planned so it was not backported there (the change was also non
trivial).
