I'm afraid the best advice is not to use the widgets-swing-pending module. It is "unsupported" in the sense of being abandoned, as opposed to other modules where "unsupported" means they don't yet meet all requirements for official GeoTools module status (usability, docs, test coverage etc). The widgets-swing-pending module contains lots of good ideas but it is unfinished, very sparsely documented and the developer who was working on it has left the project. I think we should remove it from the 2.6 and 2.7 code base to avoid it luring more people to their doom (well, to frustration anyway). Please swap over to the gt-swing module if you can. It is also in the unsupported category but is being actively developed and maintained and the javadocs are at least minimally useful. It's also being used by a number of other list members so you'll have more chance of getting any questions answered quickly.
