I don't know about the GUI code, but I can speak a bit about shapefiles: a
shapefile
has a fixed structure, all the records in it must have the same geometric
type
and the same attributes.
Thus it's normally not possible to mix different layers (roads, buildings,
points of interst)
in the same shapefile. You normally have to export those each in a separate
shapefile.
