I think you are making new functionality, the map obviously just needs a list 
of layers "in display order". If you would like to make your own tree model 
with folder and so on (to group content by category or something) then you will 
need to create that data structure yourself. 

(On the bright side your tree model can reference the layers, and use them to 
supply a swing icon etc as needed)
