Gaby, 15-beta2 is being released over the next 24 hours (by Jody Garnett). A release candidate typically follows in a month, and the final release of 15.0 a month after that. These dates have not yet been written in the release schedule, but I am guessing that 15.0 should be out near 18 June: https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/wiki/Release-Schedule
The 15.x series including 15-beta2 require Java 8. The main reason to not upgrade is if you have deployments that are not yet on Java 8. 15-beta2 will likely be very similar to 15.0. Only bug fixes are permitted from now until the release of 15.0, and no API changes. The main reason to avoid a beta is that there is a small chance that new functionality in this branch might introduce new bugs. For example, gt-wfs-ng on master had some problems with competing plugin providers that broke functionality in GeoServer (this has now been fixed). Most functionality should be stable. There is no guarantee that bugs in 15-beta2 will not still be there in 15.0; so few bugs are found in beta and RC testing that you gain little from waiting for 15.0. Most of the drama in this release cycle happened in GeoServer, with the Java 8 and Wicket 7 upgrades, and the unexpected need for the Spring 4 upgrade. GeoTools has been tranquil by comparison. In general, because 15-beta2 is released from master, it gets *more* automated testing: online JDBC tests and GeoServer integration tests that do not get run on other branches. In my view, 15-beta2 should be very close to the new stable. Kind regards, Ben.
