here we had to handle map rotations within an E4 RCP application too, and we
did exactly as you did, that is attaching an affine transform to the CRS.

I have to say that I pretty much like the principle since we are changing
how we /see/ the world which is what projections are about, but this is
going too much "philosophy" :)

Regarding the rotation of symbols, we handle the update of the features'
style by simply tracing the rotations in the model so we don't need to fetch
it from the existing style. Simply as that.. it might be harder to maintain,
I see, but we were storing azimuths of our model objects since the beginning
so that was the most straightforward way we could think of.
