fyi, the discussion on the balance of simplicity and breadth of applications for GeoRSS, and the point where other specs become more appropriate, continues on the georss list

RSS origingated in news syndication, but is applied to a much wider range of problems on the web. Ray Ozzie (from MSFT) has said  "[RSS] is filling a role as ‘the UNIX pipe of the internet’ as people use it to connect data and systems in unanticipated ways."

Utilising this emerging lightweight system of interconnection for mapping and location is the big opportunity of GeoRSS.

For instance, the GDACS group produces many RSS feeds, most of which are only intended for automated interagency coordination.

Does this make sense?  I thought geoRSS was for news feeds?  Is this news?

Perhaps not quite on topic, but there is a new portal in Canada about to go live - A water portal that provides live access to instream flow and water quality sensors. They are going to generate georss structured feeds for subscibers wanting to monitor one or more sensors. Not sure if they have a client, but I can check.

Cheers

Carl

Standards Used: (to link to water related info in any given geographical area)

          OGC

WMS, WFS - for mapping of monitoring locations

WMC documents – Load/save application state, predefined maps

SensorML – description of monitoring locations, variables measured

FGDC - for description of information collections, tools e.g. Water Use Calculator

 - used previously for station-level metadata prior to adoption of SensorML

GeoRSS - for geo-relevant news feeds (locally, by watershed etc.)
