Not sure if this is what you had in mind for your article, but you might
take a look at www.loki.com . Loki is a Firefox/IE location toolbar, and is
based on the idea that "ambient" wi-fi can be used to accurately determine
location (see Placelab, Microsoft "Locate Me"). 

Loki provides a useful geotagging tool, lets users share location
information via email, and enables content search using accurate location as
a contextual filter. Finally, Loki invites users to explore the value of
location on the web through the creation of personalized "location
channels".
