In case of an iBook a crontab to access a web page periodically, with logs, or send mail? You could use ip2location to figure out where it is.
http://www.distributed.net has found laptops that way. An unintended use, of course.
I was going to suggest publishing the MAC address somewhere as being stolen -- one of the long forgoten and unimplimented uses for wi-fi data...
