Thanks, this was exactly what I was looking for, although with one
snafu. This is for GSM, and like you said lacks the TA. Are you aware
of any WM-capable CDMA/RTT/EVDO applications?

Unfortunately this does not support reading the Timing Advance (TA)
for each cell. This would give a fairly accurate distance from the
cell.

Also in the UK and France Orange have a set of APIs that allow you
to write applications that are location aware, getting information
from the network. Note there is a charge for these services.
