Hi list,
Thanks for all that replied. As Matthew Perry pointed out the obvious,
"Theres no such thing as a free high-res global imagery dataset (yet!)".
Is there something wrong with hope? ;-)
To answer Vincent, releasing our globe as open source has been seriously
discussed here. With me on the side of yes, I lost my cause when it
became clear that the efforts of generating and maintaining a public
version would be too much work. The reason is simple; this virtual globe
is really a meteorological tool which would not work on off-site
computers without significant code modifications. Conclusion, at this
time: no public release for our meteo-virtual-globe :-( (hopefully, our
team do contribute to various open source projects :-)
We'll see if we can have deal something with one of the big players (G,
Y!, MS) or if some wms layers suits our needs.
Have a nice day,
Alex

Hi,
We have an in-house virtual globe used for weather and meteorology
purposes. This app is mostly coded in C and uses GDAL/OGR.
Do you plan to release this virtual globe as open source one day or another ?
Google Maps tiles require an API key tied to a website url. Maybe
something could be hacked, but could complicated (and not to say,
probably against the API license!). I'm not sure OpenLayers could help
either.
Accessing GMaps from another place than the website, even for a non-commercial
use, is clearly against the API license.
Gaia, an opensource virtual globe, has recently been asked by google to stop
its use of google data.

Any clue? Would there be a way to do that freely without the need of a
Google Earth Enterprise or any other data licensing scheme?
Data, and especially high resolution data, are as for now, very expensive
(google said more than $500M for their data). Sadly, the better you can do is
use freely available data (the WMS services you pointed to), and help freeing
data by lobbying, mainly among government agencies...
Bye,
Vincent
