Even if the iPhone had a gps, it is unclear in any of us would be permitted to develop location services within Cingular's very closed location platform.

In a WiFi network, however e.g. the prospective Google/Earthlink network in San Francisco, all this phone needs is a placelab or loki style geocoded WiFi mac address lookup. I will be very suprised if a Google or Apple label Wifi positioning app is NOT available the time the phone hits the market in June, or at the latest when Google's SF net goes live. Given Eric Schmidt's role on the Apple board, and Google's stated intentions to support the San Francisco network with contextual ( location based) ads, this looks like a sure bet to me.

A Skype stiyle VOIP app will be a nice addition too.
