GIS Specialist—Staff Associate

CIESIN, a center within the Earth Institute at Columbia University based in Palisades, New York, has an opening for a Senior GIS Specialist to support interdisciplinary studies of human-environment interactions using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technologies. Activities for the position are focused on developing, analyzing, and mapping information to investigate regional and global development indicators and to support research on natural hazards. The GIS Specialist consults with senior scientific staff on the use of advanced spatial analysis techniques and technologies to advance their applied research; automates mapping tasks through scripting and application development; and constructs efficient methods for data dissemination through the development of interactive Web mapping services and portals.

Typical duties include the creation and management of spatial data sets, including database design, data ingest, and processing; maintaining quality assurance/quality control systems; and properly documenting workflows and procedures. Analysis and mapping responsibilities include carrying out advanced vector- and raster-based spatial and statistical analysis and the creation of maps and other visualizations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
BS or BA or professional degree in social or physical science field and at least four years experience/ M.S. or M.A. plus two. Advanced degree preferred. Four (4) years experience using GIS (ArcGIS 9.x and ArcInfo preferred); some experience with image processing systems (ERDAS, ENVI, or other) is also required. Must have demonstrated experience with raster-based modeling, AML, Python, ArcObjects, Net programming and the development of Internet mapping services and portals. Must have demonstrated ability to produce publication-quality maps using ESRI products and professional graphic software such as Adobe Illustrator.

Additional skills considered a plus:

• Knowledge of other GIS software and geospatial tools such as IDRISI, GRASS, or Intergraph
• Experience in implementing FGDC and ISO metadata standards
• Working knowledge of Open GIS Consortium standards and initiatives
• Competence in statistical analysis packages such as SPSS, SAS, or STATA
• Competence in SQL scripting
• Familiarity with global development issues

GIS Analyst—Senior Research Staff Assistant

CIESIN, a center within the Earth Institute at Columbia University based in Palisades, New York, has an opening for a GIS Analyst to support interdisciplinary studies of human-environment interactions using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technologies. The position is focused on developing, analyzing, and mapping information in order to investigate regional and global development indicators and to promote research on natural hazards.

Typical duties include the creation and management of spatial data sets, including database design, data ingest, and processing; maintaining quality assurance/quality control systems; and properly documenting workflows and procedures. The GIS analyst will also assist team members with routine geoprocessing and data automation tasks; support administrative tasks related to the maintenance of the Columbia University GIS site license program; interact with potential and current user communities of CIESIN’s data products and services to evaluate their needs and to support their requirements; create FGDC/ISO-compliant metadata documentation for datasets and projects; and assist in the preparation of written materials in support of CIESIN’s projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
BA or BS in Geography or Environmental Science or other related field emphasizing knowledge of spatial analysis techniques germane to CIESIN’s ongoing and planned activities, plus experience using GIS and related geospatial technologies. Direct experience with ESRI ArcGIS 9.x and related programs. Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality map products.

Additional skills considered a plus:

• Demonstrated skills in data management (both tabular and spatial)
• Competence in statistical analysis packages such as SPSS, SAS, or STATA
• Experience in implementing FGDC and ISO metadata standards
• Familiarity with global development issues
