I believe OpenLayers supports some JSON loading for maps and markers
which I think is done using GeoJSON:

That's the JSON that I've been using in my apps and evangelizing to web mapping people in the Digital Humanities since September 2006. Inspired by Atom (probably should be "category" instead of "classname"). I'm not sure if GeoServer does the same.
