I'm looking for a solution to provide routing, "How do a I get from A to B" for the US, and then possibly a few other countries. Ideally, I'd like to use an Open Source routing engine. Does one exist? Is anyone else looking into this problem? I've found the "Tiger Mapping and Routing Server" http://sumitbirla.com/software/tmrs.php but this project seems very immature.

Routing is also dependent on good data. Ie, Street vectors need to connect at street intersections and show information like one way streets, no left/right turns etc. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Proposed_features/Routing:_turn_restrictions discusses the sort of data required.

Does anyone know if the TIGER dataset contains this information?

What other cost effective routing engines are available?
