A week-long Cyberinfrastructure Summer Institute for Geoscientists
(CSIG) will be held from August 13-17, 2007 at the San Diego
Supercomputer Center, University of California, San Diego. The CSIG is
designed to introduce geoscientists to commonly-used as well as emergent
information technology (IT) tools.
*This year's target audience will be university faculty and instructors
with the goal of promoting the development of curricula and courses in
geoinformatics. Individuals who are planning to teach such courses are
highly encouraged to apply to this Institute. *
Topics to be covered in this week-long Institute include:
- introduction to Geoinformatics;
- scope, impact, and organization of the Geo Community;
- data sharing portals and networks;
- data integration challenges;
- Service Oriented Architecture and Web services including examples
using the GEON LiDAR Workflow (GLW);
- GIS: Introduction to open standards, WMS, WCS, GeoSciML. Serving maps
with
ArcIMS, Minnesota Map Server, Google.
- knowledge representation and ontologies. Ontology-enabled data
discovery and
integration in the Geosciences;
- scientific workflow software;
- visualization of 3-D and 4-D data;
- use of supercomputer resources for education, with examples based on
synthetic seismogram models and LiDAR data analysis.
As in previous years, partial funding (Institute and local expenses)
will be available to participants.
This CSIG is made possible through funding provided by NSF
(http://www.nsf.gov <http://www.nsf.gov/>).
