The project I believe he's referring to is PlayaInfo, which really could use
some lovin' by some open source GIS tools. I'm thinking OpenLayers,
FeatureServer / GeoServer, etc.

To see what PlayaInfo currently looks like, check out http://playainfo.org/

yo hook,

can you forward this onto your geomapping enthusiast friends?

==========

For those that aren't aware, the Burning Man Earth team has developed
an instance of Black Rock City that exists in the Google Earth virtual
world (http://earth.google.com). For more information about Burning
Man Earth, visit http://bmearth.burningman.com.

(Note: The Burning Man Earth project is loosely associated with the
Burning Man Project inasmuch as it has been developed by people close
to the organization (including Rod Garret, the city designer, and
Andrew Johnstone, developer of Virtual Burning Man), with support from
and oversight by the Burning Man Project. However, their development
team acts as an independent group separate from ours.)

The Burning Man Earth Project is looking for an engineer to help out
with the process of optimizing the Burning Man Earth experience for
lower-end computers. In its current incarnation, the Black Rock City
data file (a KML file, in the Google lexicon) is one big contiguous
file, without regard for regions (e.g. determining what is and isn't in
the field of view, and showing high level of detail for only those
objects, while loading potential next fields of view in memory), making
it very processor and memory intensive. Google has an API and
instructions published (start here:
http://code.google.com/apis/kml/documentation/ and continue to explore)
that explain the process by which these files can be optimized.

I'm asking YOU folks because we've had many strong engineers come
through the door lately, and we admittedly don't have a lot of
intensive engineering projects on our plate, and this might be a way
for you to exercise your prodigious skills while helping out the
Burning Man Organization. If you're interested in helping out with
this project, please poke around the Google API information a bit,
check out Burning Man Earth, then let me know and I'll point you in the
right direction.

Thanks!

-pq
