*Geospatial/IT Specialist position open at UC Berkeley’s GIIF*

The Geospatial Imaging and Informatics Facility (GIIF) at UC Berkeley is seeking a full-time Computer Resource Specialist, who has experience in both IT/server support and geospatial technologies including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and remote sensing. The majority of the GIIF’s geospatial projects deal with natural resource science and management, including both physical and social sciences (e.g., forest, wetland, rangeland, grassland, urban, and social systems).

The GIIF supports research and outreach activities of users interested in geospatial analysis utilizing GIS, GPS, spatial analysis, remote sensing, 3D visualization, and webGIS. We serve the geospatial needs of students, faculty, and staff in the College Natural Resources, UC Berkeley, and entire UC community. In addition, the GIIF reaches out to K-12 youth groups and the general public.

The person in this position will gain experience in the newest geospatial software and technology available on the market today, including state-of-the-art techniques (e.g. object-based image analysis and remote sensing) and software (e.g. open-source GIS and webGIS applications) used in natural resource research and management.

*Responsibilities:*

Under the direction of the GIIF Oversight Committee and the GIIF Manager, the individual in this position will be responsible for:

1. Technical management of hardware and software (50%):

· Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot hardware and software central to the IT needs of the GIIF.

·         Manage multi-user classroom environment.

·         Maintain server infrastructure and backup hardware and software.

·         Plan for future software and hardware purchases.

2. Train/assist/help users (25%):

· Provide technical support and training to users, including helping users with specific GIS tasks.

· Provide assistance during geospatial workshops, academic courses, and GIIF events.

3. Perform geospatial project work (25%):

· Assist with complex GIS/remote sensing tasks, including research-related GPS, GIS, remote sensing and image analysis, and webGIS projects. Project work might include geodatabase design and programming, custom webGIS development, and client-side programming.

*Qualifications:*

We are seeking someone who has 3-5 years experience with IT systems maintenance, but also has experience in one or more geospatial technologies. The ideal candidate will have:

   * Experience managing a multi-user networked workstation
     environment, comprised primarily of Windows 2000/NT/XP.
   * Experience istallating, maintaining, and upgrading software
     (primarily geospatial software) and hardware.
   * Experience with ESRI GIS software and applications, including
     ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Server.
   * Experience with remote sensing software (e.g. Erdas Imagine,
     Definiens Professional (“eCognition”), ENVI) and GPS units (e.g.
     Garmin and Trimble) a plus.
   * Experience maintaining Linux servers a plus.

*Benefits:*

Salary is $38,652 to $45,432
