I'd suggest one of the recreational handheld Garmin units. If you don't need
any mapping on it then a basic Geko or eTrex Yellow would be perfectly
adequate.

You might though think about the following, especially considering the
geography angle.

If you were to get one of the map displaying eTrex units or a series 60
device then you could collect GPS tracks, upload them to OpenStreetMap, edit
the tracks into the road/path network and then upload the map to the Garmin
unit. In that way students would be creating their own map from the GPS for
the GPS and successive students would (and the general populace) would
benefit from the efforts of those going before them.

http://www.openstreetmap.org for more (and you can find user reviews of GPS
devices on the project wiki).

These handheld units will generally achieve an accuracy of +/- 10m in open
conditions with a good view of the satellites. Under tree cover or in urban
canyons they all suffer unless you go for one of the newer "H" range which
use a more sensitive GPS chipset and fair better but these are a bit more
expensive.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
