OpenStreetMap will be mapping NASA Ames/Moffett Field at the Yuri's Night
party, April 12. We could use help with a couple things .. do you have real
time GPS tracking devices, animation/visualization software, or accurate
non-GPS based locating devices, or simply time to spare .. Bay Area geowankers,
are you interested?Read on..

Yuri's Night is a global celebration of space exploration, the anniversary of
Yuri Gargarin's historic space flight. There are geek talks, weird art, and
lots of music. The Bay Area event happens at NASA Ames, in and around the
aircraft hangers! Last year's was a great event, one of the smartest parties
ever, extraordinary setting, highly recommended.

"Yuri’s Night Bay Area 2008 will feature talks by Will Wright and Stewart
Brand; art and sculpture by The Flaming Lotus Girls and  Michael Christian;
live acrobatic and modern dance performances by Capacitor; musical performance
by Amon Tobin and the special debut of the new band Telstar, featuring Phil
Lesh of the Grateful Dead; and much, much more!"

OpenStreetMap will be one of the science exhibits. We want to give attendees a
taste of GPS mapping, and make some pretty animations. During mapping parties,
we gather up everyone's GiPS traces, and make animations. This one from Mumbai
came out really well.

At Yuri's night, we'll have GPS devices. People can carry them around the
extensive outside space (though not all of Ames, most of the property is still
off limits). We'll upload the tracks and make animations using "party render".

At least, that's the most basic thing we can do. If we had real time tracking
devices, then there's a whole other level to the demonstration .. any leads on
borrowing something suitable? If we had devices that didn't really on GPS, then
people could wander in the inside space as well .. is wifi locating accurate
enough and what would we need to set up there, or is there another method? Do
you have any ideas on visuals? Or any other ideas?

If you want to help out with these things, you'll be rewarded with free
admission, as well as the reward of doing something cool.
We might also need a couple folks to take a shift at the booth, helping with
the devices, etc. Not sure how many this will be, but also likely free
admission.

Cheers -Mikel
