I think he (Steve) could mean real world/live/real time/augmented reality not processed imagery, but I'm just taking a guess from the gist of the conversations going on.
In (science) fiction writing this is currently be represented in books such as Rainbow's End, Halting State, Spook Country to name some prominent ones. Don't kill me, just trying to participate.
