Thanks for the input Bill.

This is definitely a factor. There is also the learning curve, not only
from a user perspective, but from an API perspective. That would be
another major factor to consider.

It's been a while since I've used MapInfo extensively but I think it
stacks up to ArcView fairly well for capability. If I remember
correctly, it also stacks up similarly for price. It may be a little
less expensive but probably not enough to justify the learning curve.
However, I *think* it may do a better job of connecting directly to
certain spatial databases so you *may* save money by not needing to
invest in artificial middleware.

BTW, I agree with Paul on the scale issue. Of course, you also need to
consider how much you may need to customize MapInfo to get it to do what
you need as well. You may be layering a comparable amount of development
costs on top of licensing.

Subject: [Geowanking] Request For Opinions On MapInfo

I've got a small sanitary district that has asked my company for
assistance with implementing a GIS. Unfortunately I won't be able to
utilize open source GIS programs that I work with on this project, or at
least not as extensively as I would like to. So I am currently
considering alternatives. I know most people use ESRI software, but if I
can't use open source I'd like to give the little guy a chance.

Do any wankers have experience with MapInfo? How does it measure up
against the "light" version of ESRI's ArcView? How would it compare to a
program like QGIS or OpenJUMP?

Thanks for any info you can provide on MapInfo. I'm currently
downloading the demo and will take the program for a run this afternoon.
