About the Conference Theme:
Taking advantage of the tremendous social, geographical, and environmental
opportunities that the greater Pittsburgh region has to offer, we have chosen
the following theme: Linking Rural and Urban Societies and Ecologies. This
theme will help us think more about social-ecological systems in an
increasingly urbanized and politicized world, and it will allow us to explore
salient topics, such as food, architecture, climate change, water, business,
energy, transportation, education, values, fairness and wellbeing, among many
other possibilities.

About the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences:
A major aim of AESS is to encourage engagement with today's socio-ecological
challenges by serving the needs of environmental scholars and scientists who
value interdisciplinary approaches to research, teaching, and problem-solving
(learn more about our association

 our journal
here<http://e2ma.net/go/12964765989/214220813/238861348/1401437/goto:http:/aess.info/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=939971&module_id=83941>).
The meetings provide an incredible opportunity to engage with a diverse range
of environmental scholars and practitioners through sessions, workshops,
receptions, and excellent plenary talks. AESS is particularly accessible to
young scholars and students, providing opportunities to network and grow.

About the Venue at Duquesne:
Pittsburgh provides a compelling setting to explore this year's theme: Linking
Rural and Urban Societies and
Ecologies<http://e2ma.net/go/12964765989/214220813/238861349/1401437/goto:http:/aess.info/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=939971&module_id=124341>:
As we think of ways to bridge the rural/urban divide, we are fortunate to have
a venue that showcases this theme very well. Pittsburgh is a post-industrial
city that has reinvented itself through higher learning institutions and the
health care industry. However, the urban center is embedded in the vast rural
region of Northern Appalachia, with legacies of agriculture, tourism, resource
extraction, and manufacturing. There will be several field trips that explore
these socio-environmental histories (e.g. urban farms, mining legacies, the
Cultural District, and the Strip District). Conference participants will have
ample opportunities to explore one of the most livable cities in the U.S.

About the Call for Proposals:
Our call for conference presentations occurs in two parts.
Call #1 - for sessions
In this first call we are solicited proposals for pre-organized workshops,
symposia, panels, and roundtables in which all (or a substantial number of)
scholars have already agreed to participate.
Session proposal deadline has passed.
Call #2 - for individual papers/presentations
The second call is for 1) submission of abstracts for individual panel
presentations approved in the First Call, and 2) individual proposals for new
panel presentations and poster presentations. AESS will make every effort to
group new panel presentations together as thematic sessions, and may assign
individual proposals to unfilled sessions developed from the first call.
Individual proposal deadline: March 1st, 2013.
