Position Overview  The ANU College of Law seeks to appoint a Research Associate 
or Research Fellow to work alongside the Principal Investigator, A/Professor 
Don Anton, on a research project looking at deep seabed mining by developing 
States in the South Pacific, funded under the AusAID Development Research 
Awards Scheme (ADRAS).

The project aims to test the truth of fundamental questions, including i) 
whether developing States in the South Pacific can capture a significant 
proportion of the total benefits of mining through benefit-sharing or 
contractual arrangements; ii) whether any benefits that are so captured will 
flow back so as to raise the general welfare and living standards within the 
State; and iii) and whether deep seabed mining can be carried out in an 
ecologically sustainable manner.

In this role you will be have a number of research responsibilities, including 
the preparation of regular research reports. You will also have the opportunity 
to undertake independent, guided research related to the project with a view to 
publication in your own name.

The project funder, AusAID, seeks to build capacity in the South Pacific and 
applications are encouraged form qualified individuals from this region.

Role statement  PURPOSE STATEMENT:

A Level A Research Academic is expected to contribute towards the research 
effort of the institution and to develop his/her research expertise through the 
pursuit of defined projects relevant to the particular field of research.

A Level B Academic (Research Intensive) is expected to contribute towards the 
research effort of the ANU College of Law generally and, in particular, to 
develop his/her research expertise through the pursuit of defined research 
projects and related tasks assigned by the Principle Investigator, and to carry 
out independent and/or team research within the field.

POSITION DIMENSIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS:

The Research Associate/Research Fellow will be located in the ANU College of 
Law, one of Australia’s leading centres of legal research that provides a 
supportive and vibrant intellectual environment. The Research 
Associate/Research Fellow will be a valued member of that community and will 
participate fully in the social and academic life of the College and the 
University.

ROLE STATEMENT:

Specific duties required of a level A Academic may include:

• The conduct of research under limited supervision or, where appropriate, 
independently, and contribution to the production of conference and seminar 
papers and publications from that research; • Involvement in professional 
activities including, subject to availability of funds, attendance at 
conferences and seminars in the field of expertise; • Some administrative 
functions primarily connected with the area of research of the academic; • 
Attendance at meetings associated with research; • Comply with all ANU policies 
and procedures, and in particular those relating to work health and safety and 
equal opportunity;  and • Other duties as allocated by the supervisor or the 
Vice-Chancellor consistent with the classification of the position.

RESEARCH FELLOW

Specific duties required of a Level B Academic may include:

• The conduct of research either as a member of a team or independently, and 
the production of conference and seminar papers and publications from that 
research; • Involvement in professional activities including, subject to 
availability of funds, attendance at conferences and seminars in the field of 
expertise; • Administrative functions primarily connected with his/her area of 
research; • Attendance at meetings associated with research; and • Comply with 
all ANU policies and procedures, and in particular those relating to work 
health and safety and equal opportunity; and • Other duties as allocated by the 
supervisor or the Vice-Chancellor consistent with the classification of the 
position.
Selection criteria  

ACADEMIC LEVEL A (RESEARCH ASSOCIATE)

1. A Bachelor’s degree in Law, preferably with first class honours, is 
essential. A further qualification in law or experience in advanced research in 
law will be highly regarded.
2. Demonstrated ability to undertake advanced research in law with minimal 
supervision.
3. Excellent oral and written communication skills and an ability to develop 
positive relationships with colleagues at all levels.
4. A demonstrated understanding of equal opportunity principles and policies 
and a commitment to their application in a university context.

ACADEMIC LEVEL B (RESEARCH FELLOW)

1. A Bachelor’s degree in law and a master’s degree or doctorate in law, or 
equivalent research experience.
2. Demonstrated ability to undertake advanced research in law with minimal 
supervision.
3. Ability to undertake independent research suitable for submission to an 
internationally recognised academic journal.
4. Highly developed oral and written communication skills and an ability to 
develop positive relationships with students and colleagues at all levels 5. A 
demonstrated understanding of equal opportunity principles and policies and a 
commitment to their application in a university context.
