Duties and Responsibilities
The Research Fellow in Environmental Politics will work with Professor David
Coen, the Principal Investigator (PI) and Dr Tom Pegram, Co-Investigator
(Co-I), on a EU-funded Horizon 2020 Project on ‘Global Governance and the
European Union: Future Trends and Scenarios' (GLOBE). It is a collaborative
project with leading global governance researchers from China, Europe and the
US. The project aims to identify the major roadblocks for effective and
coherent global governance, by multiple stakeholders, and in a multi-polar
world. It will provide policy-makers, academics and the general public with an
analytical grip on the state of play in global governance by developing new
theoretical and methodological approaches. It also hopes to equip national and
European policy-makers with tools to identify constraints and possibilities in
several global governance scenarios in 2030 and 2050. More information on the
GLOBE project is available here:
https://www.globe-project.eu/en<http://www.globe-project.eu/en>

Specifically, the project will focus on the role of the private sector in
responding to the environmental imperative, informed by growing evidence of the
negative economic effects of climate change on industry operations and returns
for investors. The project will map private data initiatives aimed at holding
corporations to account for their carbon emissions, evaluate the soft
regulatory function of non-state actors in monitoring corporate carbon
inventories, and provide a preliminary assessment of efforts by state,
intergovernmental bodies and non-state actors to more proactively enlist
corporations in the fight against climate change.

The Research Fellow will work collaboratively with the PI and Co-I on the
workpackage 'Politics of Environmental Governance' which the UCL team is
leading on, duties of the post include, assisting with design of survey
instruments and preparation of survey processes, assisting with data analysis
and assisting with data management.

The post will commence on the 01 January 2020 and is initially funded until 28
August 2021. Please note that the start date is negotiable.
Key Requirements
The ideal candidate will hold a PhD (or be near completion of) in political
science, international relations, or related discipline.

The candidate must have demonstrated ability to undertake data scraping and
work with survey data. She/he will have experience with large-n data analysis
and management. She/he will have strong substantive knowledge of the research
literature on global governance/international organisation, ideally on
environmental governance. The ideal candidate will also be able to demonstrate
strong communication skills (oral and written, to both academic and
non-academic audiences) and the ability to work well in a team.

Familiarity with scholarship on environmental governance and non-state actors
would be desirable.
