Dear Colleagues,
We kindly wish to invite you to register (if you have not already) for the 2020 Virtual Forum on Earth System Governance, on 15-17 September: “Between Precarity and Possibility: Implications of Disruption for Earth System Governance”. This event will explore challenging questions about the current and ongoing nature of disruption in multiple domains of sustainability governance, encompassing not only the impacts of the global COVID19 crisis, but also the ongoing climate and biodiversity crises, as well as their interaction with broader issues of political polarization, economic downturn, and technological change, among others. The implications of this unprecedented confluence of forces for sustainability and justice are largely unknown and deeply challenging. While increased precarity confronts those who live in wealthier countries, it is already a reality for many across the globe in less wealthy societies. At the same time, new possibilities arise for rethinking social norms and values, and reimagining and transforming governance. Yet, this does not happen on a blank slate, as existing patterns of power and inequality inescapably shape politics and governance. Guided by the Earth System Governance Science and Implementation Plan 2018-2028, the 2020 Virtual Forum will interrogate the interplay of precarity and possibility that arises at this historical moment, and the implications for sustainability governance. The distinguished Keynote Speaker will be Professor Rachel Kyte, Dean of the Fletcher School, Tufts University, United States. Prior to this role, Professor Kyte served as a special representative of the UN Secretary-General, and as Chief Executive Officer of Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), and as World Bank Group Vice President and special envoy for climate change. This provides an outstanding opportunity to draw connections between research and policy challenges at this historical moment. The full programme includes: 3 Plenary Sessions, 6 Semi-Plenary Sessions and 9 parallel Innovative Sessions, as well as room for informal networking and breaks. Notably, this includes a special plenary hosting a Science-Policy dialogue on Stockholm+50. In addition, side-events will also be held, such as the Early Career World Café on the 14th September, the Taskforce & Meeting Day on the 18th September, and the Asia-Pacific Perspectives on 16th September. We invite you register to join the conversation! The 2020 Virtual Forum is hosted by Utrecht University and the Earth System Governance Project, its organizational efforts led by the International Project Office, based at the Faculty of Geosciences, University of Utrecht, the Netherlands. The 2020 Virtual Forum on Earth System Governance builds upon a long tradition of global annual events on earth system governance, from Amsterdam (2007 and 2009) to Colorado (2011), Lund (2012), Tokyo (2013), Norwich (2014), Canberra (2015), Nairobi (2016), Lund (2017), Utrecht (2018) and Oaxaca (2019).
