Dear all,

Together with colleagues at NYU and NYU Abu Dhabi I am organizing a
conference on climate governance in Africa at NYU Accra in June 2023.
Please feel free to submit an expression of interest and/or forward it to
anyone who may be interested. We are specifically seeking scholars and
policymakers who are based in Africa.

Many thanks,

This workshop focuses on climate change governance in Africa. Climate
change governance refers to the design of policies and institutions to
promote climate change mitigation and adaptation in ways that are
proactive, just, and efficient. While existing research has documented the
impacts of climate change and investigated strategies for mitigation and
adaptation, much less work investigates the factors that affect citizens’,
policy-makers’, and international actors’ behavior when faced with
difficult mitigation and adaptation choices.

Despite being a small contributor in terms of carbon emissions, Africa will
disproportionately bear the harmful effects of climate change in the coming
decades. Further, little research on climate change has been funded in
Africa. In the past three decades, less than 5% of global funding for
climate research supported research on Africa, and of the research funded,
nearly 80% has gone to Global North institutions.

The goals of the workshop are as follows:

   - Share recent research on climate change governance in Africa, with a
focus on research conducted by African scholars.
   - Take stock of the climate change governance research landscape in
   Africa.
   - Connect Global North and Global South scholars and institutions
working on climate change governance research in/on Africa to encourage
   future collaboration.

The workshop will be held on June 16-17, 2023, in Accra, Ghana, and will
consist of presentations by researchers and practitioners, networking
sessions, and lectures. We are seeking expressions of interest from
researchers and policymakers based in Africa and working on the topic of
climate governance. The conference will be conducted fully in English.
Participants’ travel, meals, and accommodation will be fully covered.

Please submit an expression of interest by March 10 using this form:
