Professorship in Political Science with a focus on Environment and Development
(Assistant Professorship without Tenure Track)

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Basel seeks 
to fill a Professorship in Political Science with a focus on Environment and 
Development beginning on August 1, 2025, or by appointment. This Assistant 
Professorship without Tenure Track financed by the Max Geldner Foundation is 
limited to 5 years.

Your position

We are looking for a scholar who represents this Professorship in Political 
Science in teaching and research. The professorship in the field of political 
economy is focusing on the developmental consequences of global change, in 
particular environmental and climate change, on issues such as migration, 
conflict and increasing inequality from the perspective of political economy. 
The emphasis is on the challenges and opportunities for political actors such 
as governments, international organizations, non-governmental organizations as 
well as the population. The professorship examines these topics with empirical 
analyses using current quantitative and qualitative methods.
We expect the professorship to provide dedicated teaching within the political 
science programs at BA and MA level. The professorship also contributes to the 
Master in Changing Societies at the Department of Social Sciences. Willingness 
and commitment to interdisciplinary and transversal cooperation within the 
Department of Social Sciences, especially with Sustainability Studies, are 
expected.

Your profile

Applicants must have an excellent doctorate and an excellent record in research 
and publications, according to their academic age. They are expected to 
demonstrate profound methodological knowledge and teaching experience at 
various levels. The willingness to (co-)supervise Master and doctoral students, 
the acquisition of third-party funding and the ability to work in a team are 
expected.
Excellent English language skills and the willingness to acquire German 
language skills are required.
