Transforming the International: Scholarship and Solidarity in a World of
Inequalities

In an era marked by deepening social, economic, and environmental disparities,
the British International Studies Association (BISA) and International Studies
Association (ISA) Joint Workshops offer a welcoming space for advancing
innovative research and pedagogy that analyses and reimagines the structures of
the international system. We aim to explore what it means to identify and
challenge the evolving dynamics of inequality in the international arena.

We seek proposals for workshops that will critically engage with issues such as
social and climate justice, decolonising knowledge, human rights,
peacebuilding, sexual democracy, economic inequality, structural violence,
critical pedagogy, transnational solidarities, and practices of resistance.
Proposed workshop themes should focus on global challenges, emphasizing
theoretical, methodological, and empirical approaches that confront orthodoxies
and explore transformative possibilities in a world of worlds.

In seeking to bridge research, pedagogy, and political engagement, workshop
proposals are encouraged to share innovative approaches to understanding and
addressing structural inequalities, with a focus on fostering intellectual
collaborations across institutions, fields, and sectors.

Join us in creating a space where participants can explore how scholarship can
not only critique but also contribute to actionable pathways toward equity and
justice. The BISA-ISA Joint Workshops aim to deepen our understanding of the
global forces shaping inequalities. In doing so, we hope to advance the
frontiers of research and pedagogy on global inequalities, contributing to
conversations that challenge, inspire, and shape the future of the field and
the future of our worlds.

editorships including serving as the current home of International Political
Sociology.

Workshops will be held at the Newcastle Civic Centre in the heart of the city.
Newcastle is a modern, thriving city and destination that you will love. With
over 2000 years of history, Newcastle offers spectacular countryside,
outstanding castles, stunning coastlines, vibrant cultural life in a compact
city centre, and the legendary friendliness of its residents (known as
Geordies). Newcastle is very easy to get to, with an international airport
(there are daily flights from Amsterdam, Dubai, Dublin, London, and Paris as
well as frequent flights from other European and North African locations),
excellent rail connections (including 40 trains per day from London), an
international ferry terminal, and major road routes. Newcastle Airport is just
15 minutes away from the Civic Centre via its Metro system. Newcastle was voted
‘the easiest city to get around in England’ by the readers of Conde Nast’s
Traveller magazine and the top place in the world to visit in 2018 by the Rough
Guide. From Hadrian’s Wall to the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and the
Sage, Newcastle offers a blend of the old and new alongside a thriving pub
culture and food scene.

Proposal Requirements
Workshops can be research and/or pedagogically themed. If the workshop is open
to accepting alternative submissions to a standard research paper such as
cultural artefacts (e.g., films, ‘zines, photography), partial paper drafts
(e.g., based on research designs, theoretical connections), policy
papers/reports, course proposals, syllabi, and teaching tools, please indicate
this in your proposal.

Workshop proposals must include the following:

  * A workshop title and two named conveners (we strongly recommend that one
of the convenors be a member of BISA and the second an ISA member) with full
contact details
  * A description of the proposed topic area, its relevance to the conference
theme, and anticipated outcomes (e.g., international network, special issue,
edited volume, policy advocacy, teaching collaboration, grant proposal) (max.
500 words)
  * A list of possible paper topics and potential participants (including
their institutional affiliations) (250 words)
  * A short biography of each workshop convenor (max. 250 words each).

There are a maximum of two convenors per workshop. A workshop proposer can only
be listed as (co-)convenor for one workshop. For each proposal, we recommend
that one workshop convenor be a current member of BISA and the other a member
of ISA. Conveners will not receive any financial compensation and will need to
fund and arrange their own travel and accommodation.

Workshop Format
ISA-BISA Workshops will be an in-person only event. Virtual participation
cannot be accommodated.

The inaugural ISA-BISA Workshops run from October 10-12, 2025. On October 10,
they will begin with registration, a workshop session, a plenary, and welcome
reception. The registration desk will open at 10:00am. Workshops and other
conference events will take place on day 2 and 3 (October 11 and October 12)
from 10:00am - 17:45pm. Each day will have two workshop sessions complemented
by other activities.

Participants are expected to attend all sessions of their respective workshops.
In total, there will be 5 sessions of 2 hours each. This format seeks to
provide focused discussions amongst a closed group of participants with shared
interests. We anticipate workshops being between 15-25 people in size.

Convenors of accepted workshops will have the following tasks/responsibilities:

  * Circulate your call for workshop papers within your networks and contact
those you have suggested as potential contributors. Please ensure that everyone
submits their abstracts through our submission portal prior to the submission
deadline
  * Review abstracts submitted to your respective workshops and make the
decision on acceptance/decline. We will be in touch about how to review
applications and record decisions. Once the abstract selection is completed, we
will send out decision emails
  * Once the registration is open, we will send official emails to invite
those who have been accepted to register. Please reach out to prospective
participants for your workshop to make sure they register by the deadline
  * Structure and organise your workshops to meet your aims and objectives.
This includes assigning papers to sessions, types of presentations, assigning
chairs/discussants, et cetera. Submissions must be shared at least 2 weeks
before ISA-BISA 2025 to enable workshop participants to read them.
