Dear Colleagues,

We invite your applications for a workshop on "Social Movements Opposing
Climate Policy in Comparative Perspective" to be held at Brown
University, February 20-21, 2026. This workshop is co-sponsored by the
William R. Rhodes Center for International Economics and Finance, the
Climate Solutions Lab, and the Climate Social Science Network.

Decarbonization is a political project that entails potentially massive
structural social change, transforming the value of resources, and the
locus of power and status. As a result, we have seen many recent social
movements emerge to oppose climate policy. But when, where, and how does
decarbonization become a threat that is significant enough to spur
mobilization?

We suggest combining a growth models approach with social movement theory
to develop more nuanced predictions about this type of mobilization. We aim
to bring together a community of scholars who can use these perspectives to
augment an emerging body of scholarship on cases of climate policy
opposition. A more detailed call for papers can be found here
