Dear colleagues, I am writing to share three resources from IISD's Earth Negotiations Bulletin team that you may find useful for your fall syllabus.
*A Guide to the Global Agreement to End Plastic Pollution* This guide serves as a resource for understanding the ongoing negotiations, key issues at stake, and roles of different stakeholders in shaping the agreement. It provides insights into the political, scientific, economic, and legal dimensions of the treaty process, drawing from past multilateral environmental agreements and the lessons learned from the INC sessions. The final round of negotiations, which opens next Monday, may not end up with everything that was on the table from the start, but your students will find it valuable to know what was considered and why, and which issues various groups will seek to add to future agendas, should the treaty fall short of some groups’ ambitions. https://www.iisd.org/publications/guide/guide-global-agreement-end-plastic-pollution *Indigenous Peoples in the Rio Conventions* At the 2024 sessions of the Conferences of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, and the Convention on Biological Diversity, representatives of Indigenous Peoples made advances in the arrangements for their engagement with multilateral environment negotiations. This report outlines key developments relevant to the engagement of Indigenous Peoples under each of these Conventions. https://www.iisd.org/system/files/2025-07/indigenous-peoples-in-rio-conventions.pdf *International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion on obligations of states in respect of climate change* We have been tracking the process leading to last week’s landmark announcement through ENB reporting on the hearings in December and the announcement on 23 July. Hearings: https://enb.iisd.org/international-court-justice-climate Announcement: https://enb.iisd.org/international-court-justice-advisory-opinion-climate-change In addition, our SDG Knowledge Hub news and guest articles offer a variety of perspectives on the process: https://sdg.iisd.org/tag/icj-advisory-opinion/ I would love to hear how you use IISD-ENB resources in your classrooms!
