James W. Rote Distinguished Professorship in Marine/Coastal Science and Policy
Full Professor / Tenure-Track
Division of Science and Environmental Policy
Job #: FAC2007-125
Open until filled. Application Screening Begins:
01/11/2008
The Division of Science and Environmental Policy (SEP) at California
State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) is seeking a marine/coastal
scientist with a demonstrated track record in linking science with
policy making and management. Unlike many traditional tenure-track or
tenured University positions, the successful candidate for the James
W. Rote Distinguished Professorship in Marine/Coastal Science and
Policy will have not only distinguished him/herself through scholarly
publication of scientific research, but will have also contributed
substantively to the development and/or implementation of policy in
the marine/coastal environment. The late Dr. James Rote wrote
extensively about bridging the gap between science and policy and
spent much of his career working in California State government as an
environmental policy advisor. Dr. Rote was one of the chief
architects of the visionary plan that created the Monterey Bay
National Marine Sanctuary and was a founding faculty member of
California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB). The successful
applicant for this position will be expected to complement and extend
this legacy. SEP offers a rigorous interdisciplinary Bachelor of
Science degree with concentrations in Marine and Coastal Ecology,
Watershed Systems, and Science Education. We also offer an
interdisciplinary Masters of Science degree in Coastal and Watershed
Science & Policy. We focus on hands-on, active learning, with an
emphasis on the application of science and technology to
environmental policy and decision-making. Additional information
about the SEP program may be found at
<http://sep.csumb.edu>http://sep.csumb.edu.
The successful candidate for the Rote Professorship will work with
existing faculty and affiliated scientists to advance the application
of science and technology to marine and coastal environmental
decision-making at local, national, and global scales, including such
diverse subjects as ecosystem-based management, and coastal zone
management, and marine protected areas. The candidate will develop
and teach courses that demonstrate the linkages between marine and
coastal sciences, economics, and policy to prepare students for
careers in real-world regional and global environmental
problem-solving activities.
CSUMB is a comprehensive public university committed to serving the
diverse people of California. CSUMB welcomes applicants who are
knowledgeable about, and interested in working within, a
cross-cultural learning environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate with the local/regional community to link marine and
coastal science to environmental policy and/or environmental management.

one or more upper division and/or graduate courses related to marine
and coastal environmental policy, management, or economics as well as

environmental policy-related field.
- Experience in applying sophisticated technologies in teaching and
research that link science to policy and/or environmental
decision-making. Such technologies may include geospatial data
processing (particularly Geographic Information Systems),
visualization, modeling, or instrumentation for ecosystem monitoring.
- Professional experience (both above and below the coastline)
working directly with scientists, managers, and policy makers, and a
willingness to continue such interactions.
- Demonstrated ability to help students and community partners
understand how technological applications facilitate real world
policy and environmental decision-making.
- A decade or more of active involvement and leadership in the
process of developing marine and coastal policies, regulations, or
environmental decisions.
- Success in securing external funding to support research, including
undergraduate and graduate student research.
