Rado S. Dimitrov, “Confronting Non-Regimes: Science and International Coral Reef Policy,” Journal of Environment and Development, vol. 11, no. 1 (March 2002), pp. 53-78

This is the only article in political science on the global politics of coral reefs. It provides the history of political discussions, detailed scientific knowledge, and review of theoretical explanations of the 'nonregime' on coral management.

Dear all,

I am interested to review literature on coastal resource management and conservation approaches, particularly in the Pacific, but generally or else where is also welcomed.

I am particularly interested in the question of which approach is more effective to both improving community livelihood and marine/ reef environments. As many conservation-based projects seek to create no-fishing zones/conservative MPAs and bring alternative economic livelihood practices to communities, it seems they are generally less successful as hoped. Meanwhile, approaches to reform current fisheries/coastal management practices may lead to the same targets envisioned though not met through conservation approaches, e.g. biodiversity conservation, improved value/profit to communities, improved quality of catch, health, local empowerment...etc.

Again, these are just thoughts at the moment and I am grateful for any suggested literature to inform this conversation.

Many thanks!
