This may be for information purposes only. I put some information about South
Korea's projects. There should be many more projects, but I hope this is
useful.

Sincerely,

Hang Ryeol Na, ph.d. student at SUNY-ESF

1. KOICA's training programs.

They cover a broad range of topics such as rural development, but environment
is a major one. Most of them are funded. You can download the entire list of
the 2009 programs at http://www.koica.go.kr/english/schemes/training/index.html

2. International College Student Exchange Program between Korea and ASEAN
Nations

Supported by the ASEAN Secretariat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade
in South Korea, it is a program that educates students from the 10 ASEAN
nations for 1 year at Daejeon University. Energy and environment are a strong
focus.

3. Nuclear Knowledge Preservation Program
Regional Co-operative Agreement (RCA) Regional Office, an intergovernmental
agreement for East Asia & Pacific region, under the auspices of the IAEA,
provides funded-training projects in nuclear science and technology, in
collaboration with Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). Not only
nuclear energy, but also environmental policy/practice is a substantial
component. They include master’s degree course, post-doctoral fellowship
program, temporary staff fellowship program, etc.

4. International Urban Training Center (IUTC)

Gangwon Province, South Korea and UN-HABITAT provide eco-restoration and
strategic planning for urban areas in the Asia-Pacific region to bridge the gap
between environmental research and governments. Training programs cover field
work, strategic planning, case studies, and professional networking.

5. Ministry of Environment, South Korea

In partnership with ASEAN, ‘Research on the Ecological Restoration Project for
the Tropical Region of Southeastern Asia’ finished its 1st and 2nd phases from
2000 to June 2008. The project proposal for the 3rd phase has been submitted.
The collaboration includes field or regional research programs, educational
training programs for ASEAN nations, and the hosting of an international
workshop or forum.

For the annual educational training program for 10 ASEAN nations, Korea is
planning to train officials from ASEAN member countries in resource recycling
and waste management systems by introducing Korea’s waste control policy and
waste treatment technologies such as RDF, incineration, pyrolysis, etc.
