Respondendo a mim mesmo: acho que eu entendi. A licença MIT (ou X11) foi usada como licença-meio para relicenciar as partes que não estavam cobertas pela licença Apache 2.0. Acho que é isso. A página <http://squeakland.org/download/license.jsp> demonstra que o licenciamento do Squeak é híbrido: Apache 2.0 + MIT. Ou seja, "livre" de facto.
