Just to add to what Karin said, it is usually recommended to try to crush
the cord, rather than make a clean cut, like would happen with scissors or
a razor blade. If you crush it, the blood can't get through the crushed
part to the place where it is cut. Crushing it with your fingers and then
using fingernails or something like that to separate the cord from the
placenta is I think what Karin was getting at. Also, try to do this far
from the body, to decrease the risk of bleeding.
