Okay, and I thought I was crazy for not only buying
gerbils that I didn't need, but also for buying 3, not
just 2, because I was worried that the third brother
would be lonely without his sibs.

You've got me beat on sappiness, I'll give you that,
but I've got to respect your compassion.

Okay--as for your question--the dark yellow urine
that is strong smelling could infact be due to a
touch of dehydration. In humans, at least, less
water will cause a darker and more concentrated
urine. I hope this is the case, because it will be
resolved now that your little gerb has access to water
unhindered.

If you see any blood in the urine, or if it is brown,
instead of dark yellow, this could be a bad sign.
I'm not sure if there is anything you can do for
internal bleeding in a gerbil. In this instance,
antibiotics might be a good idea. They won't hurt,
and might help.

In the meantime, cross your fingers and hope for the
best. He sounds like a plucky thing, hopefully
everything will work out okay.
