Is your dog's insurance medical (veterinarian) insurance, or life
insurance? I assume it's a standard policy and the premiums you pay are
based on things like age and breed of dog?

I hate to be a wet blanket, but I don't think Lloyd's or other insurance
underwriter would give much interest over a policy for a gerbil. For
starters, insurance policy face amounts must have at least some
relationship to the financial loss you are insuring against. You cannot
insure your old car for the price of a new one. Big policies for odd
things like a baseball player's arm or actress's face DO relate to what
their future earnings might be if they remain undamaged.

So an insurer would ask you what financial damage you might face if your
gerbil died or required reasonable and prudent vet care. I think the
answer you give doesn't justify processing the paper and you'd be appalled
at the premiums.

It might be different if a profitable gerbil breeder wanted to insure
against sickness or catastrophe to his/her productive colony.

Sorry, guys. I also would/do miss departed pets. But insurance won't pay
for that.
