I've had mixed results with those plastic ball things.

My two pet-store adult gerbils didn't know what to do with the thing,
and just looked at me quizically until I took them out (one at a time, I
mean... I didn't put them both in there at once).   :)

I've tried to introduce it to some of my younger gerbils, and they seem
to find it mildly amusing, but I don't think they have enough mass to
actually push the thing around and steer effectively.  They're not
scared of it, though, and the cats are quite fascinated by it,
especially when it's occupied.  :)
