While an individual gerbil may not experience
discomfort from an inherited defect, respectfully I
don't think this is an advisable standard from which
to proceed.

A better standard would be to ask why the trait has
been determined to be a fault in the first place.
Certainly there must be a reason for this decision.

The problem with breeding from stock that has apparent
fault from standard is that the trait itself may be
passed to offspring.  As Ann-Marie noted, faults can
be "bred out" over generations. But if a problem is
evident, why perpetuate it unless the individual
possesses extremely rare traits that cannot be
obtained from non-faulted stock?
