Sorry for the delay in replying.
Possibly it is that these pups do not have to worry about predators so
it is possible for them to make noises in a more dangerous range.
Additional, it may be that noises in that range are more imperative to
adult gerbils than the more high frequency sounds they use for other
purposes.
For example, human babies scream at frequencies that are impossible to
ignore. And human adults rarely make noises like a baby except in very
special circumstances.
