When I accidentally pulled the skin off my gerbil's tail as a child, my
father (a cattleman) told me to "dip the tail in alcohol".  I couldn't stand
the idea of that burning, so I left it alone.  It withered and fell off on
its own as Sue described.  I'm glad I didn't further torture the poor thing
with the alcohol!
