Some breeders feed pregnant and nursing moms live crickets, meal worms and other insects as extra protein. For the sqeamish, a little high protein kibble (dog/cat...I use ferret...I've read "monkey-chow") can achieve the same results. Of course, this is only a supplement and since it is so high in fat shouldn't be given in high amounts especially in non-breeding gerbils. Hope that answers your question!
