Sorry to hear about your gerbil.

The fact that dominance is impossible would not necessarily stop the
older gerbil from feeling threatened. Females are like that. Males are
much less likely to attack a much smaller gerbil.

You can try and put them together but try a split cage for a long time!
At least a week.

As for what killed the gerbil. Often gerbils that are seriously wounded
in a fight will go into shock. Only a heated pad and a lot of water can
stop them dying and even that often does not work.
