"Of course in the US you may pronounce any of these words differently" I should say so! I only know the short 'a' "ah" and the long 'a' "ay". What you are describing sounds more like the German 'a' "uh" as in "Handel" (pronounced "Hendel" or "Hundel", not a homophone for "handle"). If I'm wrong on the Deutche, Eva and Ehrenfried, please let me know (maybe privately ;-) ). Is this how you are pronouncing "er" in southern Great Britain? (We need you to put some audio on your website! Ha Ha)
