When I got the boys, I bought them all the supplies they'd need. One of those
being a house- I bought one of those little yellow sail boats called a
Critter Climb and Sail. I had originally put my rats wooden house (that
they'd out grew) in but even with scrubbing it "I" still thought I smelled
urine (my rats don't care where they "go" ), so I decided to get the gerbils
their own little house.
Now, that I've replaced the house, the gerbils won't sleep in the little boat
house. When I went in just a few minutes ago to say good morning they were
huddled together like hamsters do, in the corner of their tank under the
water bottle.
I even put some of their bedding (a mix of aspen and carefresh-same thing I
use for the rats) in the boat and I worked it into the bedding some so that
they could enjoy a little burrowing. They have no trouble getting in or out
of it, they dart right for it the minute they see someone's hand go for them.
Is it normal for them to do something like this? Am I worrying about nothing?
I already threw out the stinky wooden house, now what?
