>Has anyone have rats and gerbils live together? Is this safe?
I have both rats and gerbils, but they do not live together in the same
enclosure. Rats are much bigger than gerbils and I would think very likely
to kill and consume your gerbils. In fact, my sister once tried to
introduce a very young, lone gerbil to a rat. The rat thanked my sister for
providing a tasty morsel as he ate that baby gerbil in just a couple of
bites!
The other danger is that the gerbil might be very territorial towards any
strange creature and might attack a docile or very young rat. A nursing
gerbil might foster an orphaned new-born rat, but that's probably about as
friendly as a rat and gerbil get.
I definitely wouldn't put rats and gerbils together. In fact, I would never
put two rodents of different species together. It seems to me that most
rodents don't readily befriend other species of rodents. Especially vastly
different species like rats and gerbils.
