Paige, I seem to remember that you have given up breeding gerbils because
of problems with illness? Was this tyzzer's. If so, all of your gerbils
could well be carrying the disease. It is virtually impossible to
eliminate the organism from stock that has been in contact with infected
animals. Indeed, if tyzzers was found in lab gerbils, then the entire
colony would be euthanised. It would therefore be very irresponsible for
your gerbils to go to anyone who already has gerbils and risk infecting
their stock. If you must find new homes for your gerbils, then they should
only go to households where there are no other gerbils. The person who
adopts then should also be made aware of the fact that the gerbils may
develop symptoms in future and the need to give them appropriate antibiotic
treatment. They should also be aware that Tyzzer's has never been proven
to be transmittable to humans and that other pet species may carry the
bacteria but will not show any symptoms.
