I have a gerbil with the same problem.  For the last 3 or 4 days he's
had a little dried blood on his nose.  I'm not exactly sure what caused
it, but I have 2 educated guesses:

1) He may be allergic to aspen.  I bought some Carefresh and switched
over yesterday.

2) He may have been cutting his nose on some toys he was chewing on.  I
had a piece of PVC pipe in his tank; I took it out just to be safe.
