Hi Jason,   I'm not an expert so I will not answer the question of territory and fighting is you were to put the gerbils together.  But I do have a suggestion.  I have a 33 gallon long aquarium that I would like to use at one point in the future.  I do not want to put more than a pair in any given home.  What a waist of a 33 gallon aquarium, it is huge!  (So I can only imagine what a 50 gallon looks like.)  What I am contemplating doing is having a local hardware store cut a piece of Plexiglas to fit snuggly into the center of the tank.  I know that from past experience with fish that it is possible to by the rubbery glue that is used in aquarium.  (sometimes the leak)  This would make the center wall strong enough so that the gerbils could not push it over.   Oh well, just an idea.
